Ingredients

Scale

For the Sandwich:

  • 1 lb Montreal smoked meat or pastrami (thinly sliced, warmed)

  • 8 slices Jewish rye bread (with or without caraway seeds)

  • ¼ cup yellow mustard (or more, to taste)

Optional Sides & Garnishes:

  • Dill pickles or gherkins

  • Coleslaw

  • Potato chips or fries

  • Sauerkraut (for a tangy twist)

Instructions

Step 1: Warm the Smoked Meat
Use a steamer or small pan with a lid to gently warm the sliced smoked meat.
Add a splash of water to keep it moist and prevent drying out.
Heat over low for 5–7 minutes until warmed through.

Step 2: Prep the Bread
Slice the rye bread if it isn’t pre-sliced.
Optionally, lightly toast the slices for a crisper texture.

Step 3: Assemble the Sandwiches
Spread yellow mustard generously over one or both slices of rye.
Pile a generous portion of hot smoked meat (about ¼ lb per sandwich) on one slice.
Top with the second slice and gently press.

Step 4: Slice and Serve
Cut in half if desired and serve hot with your favorite deli-style sides.

Notes

Steam Don’t Fry – Gently warming the meat keeps it tender and juicy.
Use Real Rye Bread – Its flavor and structure are essential.
Go Generous – Don’t skimp on the meat—this is meant to be stacked!
Simple Is Best – Stick to classic mustard and bread for authentic taste.
Serve Hot – Warm meat makes all the difference.
