Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Ziti Pasta
-
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
-
Cook ziti until just al dente (about 1–2 minutes less than package directions).
-
Drain and set aside.
Step 2: Make the Meat Sauce
-
In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
-
Sauté onion for 2–3 minutes, then add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
-
Add ground beef or chicken and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
-
Drain excess fat if needed.
-
Stir in marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
-
Simmer for 5–7 minutes.
Step 3: Mix the Cheese Layer
-
In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, sour cream, egg, Parmesan, mozzarella, and dried parsley.
-
Stir until smooth and creamy.
Step 4: Assemble the Million Dollar Ziti
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce on the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
-
Add half of the cooked ziti over the sauce.
-
Spread the entire cheese mixture evenly over the pasta.
-
Layer on half of the remaining meat sauce.
-
Add the rest of the ziti, then top with the remaining meat sauce.
-
Finish with shredded mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
Step 5: Bake the Casserole
-
Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
-
Remove the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes, until bubbly and golden on top.
-
Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
-
Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
Notes
Use Al Dente Pasta – It won’t get mushy after baking.
Layer Like Lasagna – Cheese in the center keeps it rich and creamy.
Don’t Skip the Resting – It helps the layers set and makes slicing easier.
Try a Mix of Cheeses – Mozzarella, provolone, and fontina all work beautifully.
Add Veggies – Mushrooms, spinach, or zucchini can be stirred into the sauce.
