Ingredients
-
2 cups all-purpose flour
-
1 tbsp baking powder
-
½ tsp baking soda
-
½ tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1 tsp dried oregano
-
½ tsp dried thyme or rosemary
-
1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
-
2 jalapeños, finely diced (seeds removed for less heat)
-
3 cloves roasted garlic, mashed (or 1 clove raw, finely minced)
-
2 large eggs
-
1 cup buttermilk
-
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
-
Optional: extra cheese, jalapeño slices, or herbs for topping
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Loaf Pan
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line with parchment paper for easy removal.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
-
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano, and thyme.
-
Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, diced jalapeños, and mashed garlic until evenly coated with flour.
Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients
-
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs.
-
Whisk in buttermilk and melted butter until combined.
Step 4: Combine and Fold
-
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
-
Gently fold with a spatula until just combined—do not overmix.
Step 5: Fill and Top the Loaf Pan
-
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
-
Smooth the top and sprinkle with remaining ½ cup of cheddar.
-
Add sliced jalapeños or herbs for extra flair, if desired.
Step 6: Bake the Bread
-
Bake for 45–55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
-
If the top is browning too quickly, tent loosely with foil during the last 15 minutes.
Step 7: Cool and Slice
-
Let the bread cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes.
-
Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Notes
Use Room Temp Ingredients – Helps the batter mix evenly.
Fresh Jalapeños = Best Flavor – Adjust quantity to control heat.
Don’t Overmix – Keep the crumb light and tender.
Let It Cool – Slicing too early can make it gummy.
Roast Garlic for Rich Flavor – Brings out a mellow, sweet depth.
