Ingredients
For the Casserole:
-
1 lb ground beef (or shaved steak)
-
1 green bell pepper, diced
-
1 small onion, diced
-
3 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
1 tsp Italian seasoning
-
½ tsp paprika
-
2 ½ cups beef broth
-
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of beef)
-
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
8 oz uncooked pasta (penne, rotini, or elbow work well)
-
1 ½ cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
-
½ cup shredded cheddar (optional for extra richness)
Optional for Topping:
-
Crushed French fried onions or breadcrumbs
-
Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Brown the Ground Beef
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, about 6–8 minutes.
Add diced onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté for 2–3 minutes until softened.
Drain any excess grease and season with salt, pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning.
Step 2: Transfer to Crockpot
Add the cooked beef mixture to the slow cooker.
Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth until well combined.
Step 3: Add Uncooked Pasta
Add pasta directly to the slow cooker and stir to coat in the sauce.
Make sure pasta is mostly submerged in liquid.
Step 4: Cook on Low
Cover and cook on low for 2.5 to 3 hours, stirring halfway through if possible.
Check for doneness around the 2-hour mark; cooking times may vary depending on your slow cooker.
Step 5: Add Cheese & Finish
Once pasta is tender, stir in shredded provolone and cheddar cheese.
Mix until melted and creamy. Let sit uncovered for 10 minutes to thicken.
Step 6: Garnish & Serve
Top with crushed French fried onions or a sprinkle of fresh parsley if desired.
Serve warm with a green salad or crusty garlic bread.
Notes
Use Al Dente Pasta – Avoid mushiness by checking doneness early.
Cheese Choice Matters – Provolone gives classic Philly flavor; cheddar adds richness.
Don’t Overcrowd – Stir halfway through cooking to ensure even pasta cooking.
Customize Veggies – Add mushrooms or red bell peppers for extra flavor.
Cream of Mushroom Swap – Use cream cheese and a splash of broth if you prefer a homemade sauce.
