Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3: Cut in the Butter
Add cold cubed butter to the flour mixture.
Use a pastry cutter or fork to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 4: Add Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together cream, egg, and vanilla.
Pour into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
Gently fold in chocolate chips—do not overmix.
Step 5: Shape the Dough
Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead a few times until it comes together.
Pat into a circle about ¾–1 inch thick.
Use a sharp knife to cut into 8 wedges.
Step 6: Bake
Place wedges on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
Brush tops with a bit of cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar if using.
Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 7: Cool & Serve
Let scones cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack.
Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
Use Cold Butter – It creates flakiness and lift.
Don’t Overmix – Gentle handling keeps scones tender.
Freeze Before Baking – Great for make-ahead mornings.
Add a Glaze – Mix ½ cup powdered sugar with 1–2 tsp milk and drizzle over cooled scones.
