Ingredients

Scale

For the Bread:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup peeled and chopped apples (about 1 large apple; use Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results)

For the Cinnamon Swirl:

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven & Prepare the Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a separate large bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, eggs, applesauce, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Step 4: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix. Gently fold in the chopped apples.

Step 5: Add the Cinnamon Swirl
In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon for the swirl. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan, then sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top. Add the remaining batter and top with the rest of the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the cinnamon sugar into the batter.

Step 6: Bake
Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few crumbs. If the bread starts to brown too quickly on top, loosely cover it with aluminum foil during the last 10-15 minutes of baking.

Step 7: Cool & Serve
Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use the Right Apples: Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples are perfect for baking. They hold their shape and have a nice balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • Don’t Overmix: Be sure not to overmix the batter; this can make the bread dense. Stir until just combined!
  • Make it Extra Moist: If you want extra moisture, you can add a tablespoon or two of sour cream or yogurt to the wet ingredients.
  • Add Nuts or Raisins: For added texture, feel free to fold in some chopped walnuts, pecans, or raisins along with the apples.
